Worship Ministry Opportunities

These are volunteer roles directly related to our Sunday worship services and spiritual growth activities. They include tasks such as assisting with the service, enhancing our worship experience, and fostering spiritual development through study and fellowship.

There are opportunities to not only serve your community and God, but to enjoy yourself and meet new people at the same time.

The commitment is once a month.

You will receive as much training as you want. There is always room for additional:

Lectors (Readers):  It can be done in-person or over Zoom.

Flower providers: You can donate flowers or be reimbursed. You can be creative, and design the bouquets, or use them just the way they are.

Greeters:  Welcome everyone, and thank them for coming.  Give first time attenders, children or adults, welcome bags. Ring the bell to start the service. Collect the offering and with someone else, count it at the end of the service.

Join the Altar Guild: Help prepare the alter for communion by lighting the candles, preparing the wine and wafers, and ensure the sacred vessels are ready to be used during the service.

Altar Guild

Loyal parish members serve God by carefully preparing the sanctuary for weekly worship, weddings, memorials and special services. They maintain and care for sacred objects and vessels, altar linens and vestments. If you would like to join the Altar Guild, please Contact Us.

Crucifer

The crucifer carries the cross at the beginning and ending of the service, and assists the priest during the service by helping set the table and administering the chalice. If you are interested in becoming a crucifer please  Contact Us.

Flowers

Another cherished ministry is our Flower Team, affectionately known as “Flower Power!” They rotate responsibility to provide a beautiful arrangement each Sunday in the niche behind our lectern. The team also brightens our church with gorgeous displays for Easter and Christmas celebrations! If you’d like to join this blooming ministry, please see Mary Ann Helman any Sunday, or  Contact Us.

Hospitality

Our Hospitality Team is renowned for their delicious and welcoming fare each week. As people enter the church on Sundays, they often make a stop by the back counter to check out our brunch of the day! We extend great thanks to our regular team: Kathy Cocking, Nick and Margo Carrell, Chris and John Wilbur, Michael Freeman, Kris McCain, and our chair, Mary Ann Helman. We’d also like to thank Wendy Vane and Susan Stanley for contributing during special events such as visiting clergy and our Annual BBQ, and Lorraine Tiffany Malone and Bill Drewes for coordinating our fan-favorite Mimosas on Easter Sunday and other special occasions. As you can see, we enjoy a good celebration! If you’re interested in joining our team, please see Mary Ann Helman any Sunday, or please Contact Us.

Lay Readers

Our Lay Readers play a vital role in our worship services. These faithful members enrich our liturgy by reading the assigned lessons from the Old and New Testaments, leading the congregation in the appointed Psalm for the day, and guiding us through the Prayers of the People. Their committed service helps to ensure that the Word of God is clearly and reverently shared with the congregation, enhancing our collective worship experience. If you are interested in being a Lay Reader, please Contact Us.

Music

Our Music Committee is composed of talented musicians, many of whom have lent their voices to other choruses and choirs. They lead our congregational singing,  and enrich our worship experience with their skill and passion.

At the heart of our musical offerings is our classically trained organist, Sue Kinney-Whitehouse, who graces our services with beautiful postludes. On special occasions, our musical repertoire is further enhanced by the melodious accompaniment of a flautist, adding depth and variety to our hymns and postludes.

The selection of hymns is a thoughtful process, carefully planned each month to align with the church year. Our choices are designed to complement the Bible readings for each Sunday, enhance the Liturgy, and deepen the overall worship experience. Through this careful curation, we aim to introduce our congregation to the rich tapestry of hymns found within the Episcopal Hymnal, fostering a deeper appreciation for our musical heritage. If you would like to join the Music Committee, please Contact Us.

Technology/ZOOM

Born out of necessity during the pandemic, our Technology/ZOOM Ministry has blossomed into a shining example of innovation. Thanks to the technical expertise of parishioner Don Wexler and the dedication of a faithful group of church members, St. John’s Zoom ministry provides excellent opportunities for online worship and fellowship.

This ministry is a vital alternative to in-person worship, ensuring that our community remains connected regardless of distance or circumstances. In recognition of Don’s crucial contribution to this important ministry, a custom IT niche was generously donated by June Wexler in May 2024, in loving memory of her late husband, Don.

If you would like to help with technology, or our ZOOM meetings, please Contact Us.

Worship

The Worship Committee is a collaborative group of the Altar Guild, Music Team, and other dedicated parishioners who contribute to planning our weekly services. This committee meets quarterly with our rector to carefully select the liturgies for Sunday services, including special prayers, Prayers of the People, and Eucharistic Prayers. Their thoughtful planning extends to significant holy days such as Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas, ensuring meaningful and cohesive worship experiences throughout the church year.

“Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them”

– Book of Common Prayer

Whether it's prayer or asking a question, we want to hear from you!
