Organist

Sue Kinney-Whitehouse

Sue’s musical journey began at age 3 in the ELCA (Lutheran Church) in Naperville, IL. By 13, she had committed to organ lessons, launching a 51-year (and counting) career as a church organist. After earning a degree in Economics, Sue briefly worked as a bank loan officer before focusing on raising her family, including an extremely premature daughter and later, a son. Her musical talents flourished as she directed church choirs, played for school groups and solo instrumentalists, and even performed for an internationally known children’s chorus. A pivotal moment led Sue to Calvary Episcopal Church in Batavia, IL, where she was warmly welcomed as the Director of Music and confirmed as an Episcopalian.

In 2010, an unexpected move to Gardnerville, NV brought Sue to Coventry Cross Episcopal Church, where she volunteered as a pianist. This led to her current role as organist at St. John’s in the Wilderness, where she continues her passion for church music alongside a varied career in musical theater.

Sue’s eclectic work history includes roles as diverse as factory worker, bartender, and campground host. She finds joy in the St. John’s community, expressing gratitude for their love and appreciation. Her favorite hymn is “Holy, Holy, Holy,” and she admires Mozart for piano and John Stanley for organ.

“Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them”
