Supporting St. John

Generosity is a journey, a practice that we learn and nurture within our hearts. It just isn’t in our nature to give away what we have worked hard to acquire or to donate our precious time without compensation. It takes something as radical as Love to inspire us to share our time, talent, and treasure with others. This is a journey we make together, a Walk in Love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Think of the three “T’s”.  Giving of your “treasure” (money) isn’t the only way you can give.  You can also donate your “time” by volunteering to participate in many of our outreach opportunities.  Donate food, or personal care items.  Visit the Veterans House in Reno.  Donate your “talents” by singing with the choir, gardening around the church, and offering to keep our web site current and relevant.

Simply put, the church as we currently know it would cease to exist.  The love of Christ would be more difficult to experience.  People would go hungry.  Beautiful hymns would no longer be heard.  Children would grow up without a firm foundation in Christian religious tradition.

The parishioners of St. John’s pledge each year a portion of their time, talents and treasure.  Others who know of the work of St. John’s and the Episcopal Camp Galilee, are also very generous givers.

The scriptures tell us we should give back to God and God’s purposes a portion of what we have been given. “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices, God is pleased.”  Hebrews 13:16. Committing to give is a concrete and tangible way of demonstrating we are engaged in the work of St. John’s.  By giving to St. John’s Vestry, it allows the Vestry to make decisions about how to build a sustainable financial future.

Although there is no specific commandment about tithing (giving 10% of one’s income), it is rooted in Christian tradition and is mentioned many times in the Bible. Examples include Malachi 3:10 – God promises blessings for tithing, Leviticus 27:30 – A tenth belongs to the Lord, 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 – Giving generously is a principle for blessing, Matthew 23:23 – Tithing should not overshadow justice and mercy, 1 Corinthians 16:2 – Give regularly and systematically.
“Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them”
